One of my friends has been working day and night trying to convince someone she knows that they need to take care of their self. This particular person suffers from a multitude of disorders that is mostly neurological in nature. The problem with this is, this person realizes he needs help and even has to get it, he just doesn’t want it and is not willing to do what it takes to get it.
No amount of convincing is going to get someone to do something if they don’t have the “want to” factor. So many times we are told that we “have to” or else. Sometimes we will do so because we were told to. That usually will wane after a short period of time. Whether it is one’s health or one’s wealth, it comes down to wanting to do something about it. It is that internal, emotional motivation that is the driving, getting one to take action mechanism involved. The “have to” stems from the cognitive part of the brain and the “want to” stems from the emotional brain.
Will-power is a cognitive process and doesn’t work when taken on its own regard. Only through the activation of the emotional “want to” will “will-power” work. The emotional component provides the drive and determination, goals provide the focus and will-power provides doing the the thing that will get you to your goals. That includes delayed gratification and resisting impulsive behavior.
Think about why you “want to” reach a certain goal. What is your reason why? What is the emotional part to it? When you discover that and you develop a “hard-nosed” determination to reach it as a goal, then create a plan of action. Keep thinking of what reaching your goals will ultimately get you. Bring your will-power to resist temptations. Be absolutely and emotionally focused on your goals. Passion is key.
Then simply go after it on a continuous basis. You gotta want it in order to get it.
Cheers,
Bob
