The United States Marine Corps is built upon being a very efficient and effective fighting force. Known as “The President’s Own”, the Marines have discovered how to make the best of any combat situation. They also learned to train leaders through all the ranks.
In their manual, Warfighting, they describe how to create a system where efficiency works the best. Through trial and error as well as using date from neuroscience, they have been able to narrow down to what works and what doesn’t work. From this, they came out with “The Rule of Three.”
The Rule of Three starts with how a command structure is set up. What the Marines realized is that the optimal direct people they actually command is 3. Anything less or more becomes less efficient as well as less effective. Our minds work at its best in threes.
We see this in many areas of life. Take a look at children’s books; The Three Little Pigs, Three Blind Mice, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and so forth. It is so much easier to remember things in threes. Christians will always remember; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We become less efficient when we have more than 3 goals or processes at given time. Even with the data, many companies and even people falsely believe that they can do more.
If you run a business and you start to do more than three tasks, then delegate out what you are not as good as. Having a partner is much easier than going solo. You can even get a virtual assistant (VA). Excellent leaders know when they need to bring in help.
When looking at the command structure of a typical Marine Battalion, we see threes all the way through. The reason being is that each Marine should not think any further than what is manageable to him or her. A Marine fire team is headed by a corporal who commands three Marines. A squad has 3 fire teams commanded by a sergeant. A platoon has 3 squads commanded by a lieutenant and staff sergeant. This simple structure goes all the way up to the highest ranks.
Each Marine is focused on only three tasks or goals. The rule is applied in all circumstances. That includes courses of action. Think about how to apply The Rule of Three in your own life, okay? It’s time to get rid of the multitasking mindset and use what really works. Since our brains works most efficiently in threes, it’s time to take that route.
JUST DO IT!!! IN THREES!!!
