One of the things that came out this year in living a longer and healthier life is to live one full of purpose. This is not new to those of us that realized this so long ago. Having purpose keeps one focused on both the short-term and long-term. It opens up one’s imagination to the possibilities and leads them down the path of being fully alive. Those with purpose also have a sense of self-worth and that’s one of the reasons why purpose is so powerful.
It seems that in today’s world, the great majority of people don’t know what their purpose is. Most will simply go to work, day in and day out, with no purpose to it. With the exception of earning enough money so they can live in their homes and maybe raise a family. They may or may not be working at something they love to do. Though, that’s not usually the case. I was talking to a lady the other day about her grandson. It seems that he wants to be a writer and author. He has already written a manuscript based on Star Wars.
Pursue Your Purpose NOW!
The problem he has run across and it’s the same for many people, is that while he loves to write, many in his family told him to get a “real job” and not pursue some “pipe-dream”. This has been the typical response of many “dream stealers” who, themselves, may have had the same thing done to them. I told his grandmother that it’s okay for her grandson to pursue his dream. In fact, without that purpose in his life, he may one day regret that he never took the chance. How many people have you known that they wished they had taken a risk earlier in their life? It’s the “shoulda, woulda, coulda” attitude that happens to many later in life.
And yet, we see some older folks fully engaged in life. They are living a life of purpose. And by the way, purpose is not limited to the individual either. Everything, from businesses to even wild animals, do better when they know they have a purpose. They are much more successful.
Even Businesses Need a Purpose
Businesses with a purpose know who their customer is and tend to serve that customer with passion. They will do whatever it takes to ensure great customer care and those the employees all the way to the upper level managers work on the same “wave length” when it comes to purpose. This is the kind of business that will thrive.
In the early days of Wal-Mart, the founder, Sam Walton, would show up at various stores and make sure that both his employees and customers were beyond satisfied. He was engaged with them. What happened? When he passed away, his spirit left the organization. His children didn’t have the same engagement and neither did the managers. The mission he set out to establish is no longer there. It is a business that has lost its purpose, except for selling on price. And that’s not a purpose.
From Purpose to Mission
Once an individual or business or even a country knows it’s purpose, it’s reason why for existing, then they will usually embark on a mission to help them realize that purpose. So, make it your mission to first, discover your purpose and then create a mission to fulfill your purpose. When you live that purposeful life, then you will know power life never before. It is your personal power. Your reason for being here.
Now, go out and start living your life with purpose.
