When you were young, you may have had dreams and then all of a sudden, someone told you to stop dreaming and get real. Well-meaning family, friends, teachers and others may have discouraged you from seeking certain dreams. Instead, they believed that you should simply go after a certain line of work. There would be so many reasons why they believed this. And it’s only because of their perception of life.
The truth is that unless they truly went after a dream they had with passion, courage and action, they will never known what can be done. If you wanted to become a millionaire, who would you ask? Your parents who never did anything in that regard? Your school teacher? Your friends? Or would you ask a self-made millionaire or billionaire?
If you want to be a successful anything, go a find those that did what you want to do. Truly successful people will encourage you and give you the truth of what it takes to do what they did. They will only encourage you when they see that you have the passion regarding your dream. They will know what that looks like, because they have it and are surrounded by others who have it too.
Some of you may have been lucky to have had a parent or both parents that encouraged your dreams. They may have told you that it was okay to express your creativity. Thomas Edison had a mother who fully encouraged him despite his 3rd Grade teacher who told him he’d never amount to anything. The late Dr. Randy Pausch of Carnegie-Mellon University had encouragement from both his parents to be creative and live his dreams. And he did! Even after he discovered he had pancreatic cancer.

It takes courage to go after you dreams. That is important because when you are going after them, you will have dream-stealers telling you to get real. Even your own family members will tell you what you should or should not do. Keep the courage and take the necessary action. Have persistence. Keep going. It’s the small, everyday actions that will eventually help you to realize your dreams. My friend, Randy Gage had an excellent viewpoint on this…
