Years ago I read a book by David J. Schwartz called ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’. He described it his book that the world is vast and there are no limits except within our thinking. Recently I talked to a young man about his dreams. He told me that he had no dreams. He aspired to nothing, other than having a job. When I challenged him if he could do anything at all in his life and it could be as big as he could possibly dream, he responded that he wanted to be a barber.
While the profession of the barber is certainly noble and a good many men use them, big aspirations seem to be not in this young man’s mindset. I remember a time when young people wanted to become an astronaut or even rise to become President of the United States. The truth is that we are only limited by our beliefs about ourselves and what we can do. The biggest successes were no different than other people except in their beliefs. Hence, those beliefs led them to take big risks to reach big dreams.
It’s time for each of you that read this post to start dreaming on purpose and make that dream BIG! All you have to do is go outside the limits of your imagination, much like what happened in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. You can get crazy. You just have to make the effort.
Here’s something that I suggest you doing. When I say do, do it. Don’t try to do it, just do it. Get a piece of paper and write down doing anything beyond your current imagination or thoughts. Imagine if you were Albert Einstein or Oprah Winfrey or anyone else that is bigger than life. Write down all the thing you would do if you were that person. Ask yourself, would you take more chances? If you had all the money, talent, skills, contacts, etc. in the world, what would you do? Write down everything you can imagine.
The truth is that only limit yourself. You have the ability to move beyond your circumstances and those of your parents. If you didn’t have the right mentor, then seek out one or more. Read more books on those that have succeeded bigger than life. Read their biographies, their autobiographies, and other books on success. Read stories of people that overcame the odds to succeed. You may find that they were no different than you or even worse off when the started. The only difference was their belief and desire.
Finally, look into your early childhood and see if there was anything there that you were passionate about. Imagine a time in your youth that you really wanted to be or do something before your well-meaning family member or even a school teacher squashed it. Many adults do that. Even our governments do that. You have go beyond what society dictates, like the big dreamers did. While college may be okay for some people, the big thinkers and dreamers are beyond that. The most successful in society are not controlled by our educational system. They realize that higher education is simply another box that limits them. Education should only be a conduit towards helping you reach your dreams, not a constraint (as it typically is). So, go outside of it and go after your BIG DREAMS!
HAVE BIG DREAMS ON PURPOSE AND TAKE ACTION TOWARDS THEM!
