The late John Richter was described as a mustang officer. That means he started out as an enlisted man and was promoted to commissioned officer on the battlefield. This was during WWII. He survived Iwo Jima and other battles.
Lt. Col. John Richter was also the officer-in-charge of the Marines Close Combat training. He received direct training from the legendary hand-t0-hand combat instructor John Styers.
Back in 1962 and before his retirement from the Marines in 1965, Lt. Col Richter created a record (LP) entitled The Secrets of Self-Defense.
