Waking up with stiff joints is finally a thing of the past for me. After hitting 50 I had thought that I may be on a downhill spiral regarding the fitness level of my body. Today, I no longer think that way.

In the last few years I’ve been able to engage in physical activities that even younger people would find challenging. One of those activities is Parkour. Heck, it’s not much different that what I did when I was in the Marines or even in my childhood. Learning how to do each movement right is key. I found the best trainers in that particular area. I believe we should learn how to crawl before we walk and to learn how to walk before we run.

Here I am doing a front lever…

What I did learn was how to protect my joints from being injured. Though, that doesn’t always happen for an older person wanting to be an action and adventure athlete. I learned how to land much better. I learned how to best build my body, especially the supporting muscles around my joints. More important is to make sure my nutrition was top notch.

BQ4A8988_untitled_ KellyWilliamsPhotography.comI asked my good friend and nutrition expert, Dr. Lori Shemek, about this. She gave me several recommendations, including taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement and omega 3’s. For the fitness activities, I’m pretty much in the know due to my multiple certifications in fitness. Yet, I do love what she also recommends in the type of exercises. Add to that her recommendations in nutrition and I’m good to go as I get even older.

Check out her recent blog post on this very subject: Shopping for Joint Healthy Products at Walmart

I’ll be taking a drive to Walmart and grab Nutrimax’s CosaminDS as I’ve used it before (and it works). If I can get it at a lower cost, why not, right?

All the nutritional stuff that Lori recommends to help reduce inflammation, I have done more and more of. As you read her article, you’ll get a lot of great information to start using right away.

My own recommendations besides the above is to simply get yourself moving. If you’re sitting, get up. I’ve seen more and more people with chronic illnesses because they stopped doing what we’re supposed to be doing, move. That and high quality nutrition. Eating junk will only make your body worse. If you’re past 40, 50, 60 or more, all this information is even more important to follow.

Some quick tips:

  • BobPark11Drink plenty of water (your joints will thank you)
  • Get up early and take a daily walk (for both mind and body)
  • If you have a desk job, get up and move for 5 minutes every hour
  • Add fun physical activities, even play counts
  • Follow the recommendations of Dr. Lori Shemek

And to my fellow Baby Boomers, please listen! Get up and move. Change your lifestyle from the bottom up. Eat and live healthy. Create a more optimal life for you and those around you. Oh, and by the way, get your community involved too.

Just do it and stay joint healthy!
